South-East London plays host to Magdalen, a restaurant devoted to the best of British cuisine. Once a Peruvian restaurant, it looks like it should have been an old pub; burgundy walls, glossy floorboards and quirky chandeliers create a unique atmosphere once you're inside. The food is charmingly old-fashioned with a contemporary twist; fish stew with gurnard, scallops and mussels, venison trotter pie and smoked haddock with choucroute are typical of the bold, earthy flavours to encounter. The wine list leans towards France for its inspiration, but other countries feature as well.
